Beading Q And A: Jewelry Business Ideas (8/1/2011)

Any tips/ideas on how to make pop top earrings?
I’ve been saving the pretty colored pop tops from energy drinks for a while. I found out how to make a bracelet from them, but no luck on earrings and I’m not an expert on jewelry making so I’m not quite sure on how I would go about making earrings out of them.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated!
BeadGal answers:
In the jewelry making section of a craft store, look for “earring findings.” (Or search online.) Look for pierced stud earring findings that have a small ball on the front with a loop at the bottom. Another version would be French wire or leverback earring findings that have loops to attach beads, or in your case pop tops.
You will need to attach your pop top with a “split ring” or thin wire. (A split ring looks like one of those round key rings that you put your keys on, just a lot smaller.)
Pierce the pop top and run the wire or split ring through the loop of your earrings and voila, you have earrings!
Alternatively, you could glue two of the tops together with a small section of chain glued to the center (2 part epoxy would hold best). Affix the chain to the earring findings with either the split ring or wire for a real fun or funky look.

I’m looking for creative, easy ways to display jewelry or make a jewelry display?
I’m looking for ideas to make jewelry displays for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings! All ideas will help!
Thanks!

Depending on what you are wanting to display.. For rings or earrings or even broaches you could make a shadow box and put glass on top.. Then you would see everything arranged.. For necklaces you could use straight pins and some type of foam.. Pin the necklaces to the foam and you can even frame it so that you have easy access just leave off the glass..
You can also take fancy ribbon and hang it up like a banner doing this you can display pins, earrings, and broaches..

How do I sell my handmade jewelry?
I’m 17 and I love making jewelry, mainly earrings but I do make others too, and I would like to sell it but I have no idea how. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
BeadGal answers:
You can make your own website and sell it there. There are many places you can easily set up a web site to sell for a reasonable monthly or yearly price, or you can contract with a web designer that is willing to work with small businesses and individuals.
You can also do it on Etsy.com or Ebay.com.
If you don’t want to do it online, there is probably a Farmer’s Market in your community. You can also look in your local newspaper for craft shows you can sell at, at churches and schools, especially around the holidays.

Would it be easy to sell Naruto jewelry? Is there any market for it?
I have multiple ideas for earrings and necklace pendants and i love making fan-crafts, but i don’t want to waste materials on something i don’t know anyone would buy.
I’m making pendants/earrings for things like Haku’s mask and the earrings Orochimaru wears. Would any Naruto fans out there buy that sort of stuff?
BeadGal answers:
You would have to get a license for it, also people who are Naruto fans may say they’d pay you anything for (all) your Naruto jewelry
