Free Herringbone and Ndebele Bead Patterns (6/16/2014)
Herringbone/Ndebele stitch is a very versatile stitch. While beautiful on it’s own, it can easily be combined with or attached to other stitches, like peyote and right angle weave. There’s flat, tubular and twisted tubular. Next time you need a strap for a pendant, forget a chain and make a twisted tubular herringbone strap. Your pendant will look like a polished piece of jewelry, instead of a pendant on a chain.

I first created the blue beaded ring but when I started with the mauve shades 11/0 seed beads, I knew it right away that it’ll be my favorite But of course, these 3 beaded rings will all be mine and mine only. So, how did I create the ring? Using Peyote Stitch I created 2 flat triangles and combined them into one. I started with 3 beads to form the side beads and then with Herringbone Stitch weaved 2 beads at a time to form the corners.

Twisted tubular herringbone was one of those beading stitches that I struggled with, until I learned a fabulously easy way to start my twisted herringbone ropes from the very talented Leslie Frazier, and now, I’m hooked. I love the way you can create twisted herringbone ropes that look like ribbons or cords by just mixing up the size and type of seed beads you use in each rope! Twisted herringbone ropes are my favorite way to use up all those size 8 seed beads that I just had to buy.

The herringbone stitch is great if you want to use a assortment of beads. You can easily transition into a new row too. If you are making a bracelet you can add dimension and shape just by using different beads for each row. Your bracelet will still lay flat too.

As promised, here is a pic of the second Ndebele Wave bracelet I made earlier this week. The difference between this one and the first one is I used size 15 silver lined crystal beads for the little triangle bits, and size 11 silver metallic beads for the outside edge.

This amazingly versatile bead-weaving stitch is a favorite of beaders everywhere. Herringbone stitch can be worked flat to make a cuff bracelet or even an amulet bag (remember those?), in tubular form for beaded ropes, lariats, and bangle bracelets, or circular to create three-dimensional beadwork and beaded jewelry. Beaders who enjoy making sculptural jewelry with seed beads have turned to herringbone as a way to add dimension and texture to their beaded creations, too!
