The bead store I shop and teach at has a very good french beaded flower artist. She regularly teaches classes and has built a following of students who take every class she teaches. I’m not sure if it’s something I am interested in doing, but I may give it a try sometime.

This brooch uses a technique called French Beading, which despite the name, is thought to have originated in Venice in the 16th Century. The method uses fine wire strung with tiny glass seed beads to form 3d flowers. It became especially popular in Victorian England, but fell out of favour due the technique being associated with the creation of funeral wreaths! Now French beading is often used in making bouquets and favours for weddings, as well as for all year round floral arrangements.

Bead and wire floral work is an old medieval art form. Its origin is murky but probably started in Germany with the development of steel needles and wire. The technique was popular in Italy with all the bead making there and in France. The French made “immortelles” – funeral wreaths which were placed on grave sites. Perhaps that’s why it is known as French beaded wire flowers. Victorian ladies also loved decorating with beaded flowers.

Victorian Beaded Flower Tutorial. But my absolute favourite has to be jewellery making and beaded flowers, including chainmail, wirework, French Beading, Victorian beading, and many other styles. The materials you need are Size 10/0 seed beads, 1 x 6mm bead, 28 gauge wire, Green floral tape, Stiff stem wire (optional) and 32 gauge wire (optional). The technique used is Victorian Beading and the difficulty is medium.

As mentioned before, I’m going into a new direction in my business. I decided to go in the way of patterns and teaching. However, as I had gotten pregnant just before my decision, I’ve softly launched a couple of tutorials/patterns before I decided I need to focus on my family right now. Now that Claire is 2 months old and getting on some sort of schedule, I need to get working on patterns again.
